From the Director 02/25/2025

As we reflect on this year’s General Assembly session, one thing is clear: the fight for justice requires persistence, resilience, and unwavering commitment. We entered this session with a clear mission—to advocate for policies that dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline, protect the rights of incarcerated individuals, and push for meaningful reforms that create a more just and equitable Virginia. While we made progress in some areas, the challenges we faced highlight the urgency of our work.

The current political climate is testing our resolve. Efforts to roll back hard-fought gains remind us that justice reform remains a contentious issue. However, history shows that change does not come easily—it happens through sustained advocacy, strategic action, and the collective power of our communities. Now is not the time to be discouraged; it is the time to double down.

Virginia Justice Alliance remains committed to amplifying the voices of those directly impacted by the justice system. We will continue pushing for policies that prioritize rehabilitation over punishment, invest in community-based solutions, and create pathways for successful reentry. Our advocacy does not end with the legislative session—it must continue year-round. We will engage policymakers, mobilize communities, and ensure that those in power hear our voices loud and clear.

I encourage each of you to stay engaged. Attend local meetings, educate your networks, and continue to support the movement for justice. The path ahead will not be easy, but together, we can create lasting change. This fight is not just about policy shifts—it is about people, families, and the future of our communities.

Stay the course. The work continues.

In solidarity,
Jennifer Dalton
Director, Virginia Justice Alliance
